The research group of Prof. Peter Oppeneer at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Uppsala University has a strong track record in theoretical condensed matter physics. The group has especially expertise in the modeling of ultrafast laser-induced processes in magnetic materials, such as theory for ultrafast laser-induced demagnetization, theory of femtosecond spin-currents in layered metallic heterostructures, and theory of ultrafast spin dynamics, relevant for the s-Nebula project. In addition, the group has a long track record in computational, density-functional-theory based methods for spin-orbit induced phenomena in ultrafast magnetism. This includes ab initio calculations of the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in real materials for which the group has developed own codes. Ab initio codes have furthermore been developed for several other spin-orbit related relativistic effects, such as the spin Hall effect and the Rashba-Edelstein effect, which are key ingredients of spin-orbit torque switching of magnetization and generation of ultrashort terahertz radiation pulses. Another recent development is a first-principles based theory for describing the electron and phonon thermalization in materials excited by a short laser pulse.

The P.I., Peter Oppeneer, has published over 325 peer-reviewed papers that have been cited over 12,000 times; h-index 58, i10-index 213. The publications include 15 Nature X papers, 2 PNAS; 2 Science Adv., 3 Adv. Mater., and 19 Phys. Rev. Letters.
